The problem with most fitness resolutions is that they’re too lofty. People tend to set unrealistically high expectations for themselves, without taking their current situation into account. To reduce the likelihood of those fitness resolutions flying out the window only to return next January, here are some tips to keep things on track.
Set “SMART” Goals
“SMART” stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Setting a very specific goal – for instance, attending three group classes per week for three months – is much more achievable than attempting to work out alone five days a week. This type of goal is specific, set within a pre-determined time frame and is realistic. When this goal is attained, a reward may be warranted, and another goal may be set.
Make It Fun
Many people give up on their fitness goals if the activities are too stressful or monotonous. Instead of simply committing to regular exercise, find enjoyable activities that get the heart rate up and break a sweat. People are much more likely to stay committed to something they enjoy doing; essentially, the concept of fun is necessary to stay on track.
Be Realistic
When January rolls around, hopes of achieving new goals are at the forefront of the minds of many. While this kind of optimism is encouraged, a healthy dose of realism is also essential. For many people, fitness resolutions tend to be very “all or nothing.” Too often, well-meaning individuals create goals to commit to working out five days per week, which is highly unlikely for those without an established routine. Instead of committing to such a lofty goal, it may be more realistic to start slowly. Once you establish a steady schedule, consider gradually adding in more activity. This allows enough time to adjust to the new routine while allowing for small, yet encouraging victories along the way.
This year, when January 1st rolls around, don’t make the mistake of setting your sights astronomically high. Instead, set the stage for success by setting a series of smaller, more realistic and attainable goals. One day at a time, you may just find yourself achieving the body of your dreams.
